Our short field produces ears 8” to 15” from the ground. With ears this low, 6” to 8” of flooding has it at eye level for the ducks. In Western Oregon, in an average year planted in good to average ground, it will mature with no irrigation in 60-70 days. Maturity time will vary with location, altitude and types of soil, but is generally considered drought resistant. We typically plant June 1st and expect mature ears by early August. Plant in uplands or floodable ponds.

If you choose to use chemicals to control weeds, work into the top couple of inches of soil 2 pints of Duel Magnum and 4 pints of Atrazine per acre. Always check with your local fieldman for local regulations. After soil is prepared, plant 20 to 25 lbs per acre. This can be drilled with a grain drill in 6” rows or with corn planter in 24” to 30” rows. Seed should be drilled 1 1/2” to 2 1/2” deep and rolled, if possible. If drill isn’t available, seed can be spin spread and then harrowed in and rolled, if possible. Apply 300 to 400 lbs of 46-0-0 fertilizer after planting or it can be worked into soil beforehand. In Western Oregon, we try to plant around June 1st.
